We have handed over our birth certificates, name change documents, immunization records, and Washington driver's licenses, watching stoically as they were desecrated with hole punches and rendered useless for resale to identity thieves. Our heads were shaved and deloused, and we underwent cavity searches, decontamination baths, and unflattering photos. We answered the questions of our interrogators, telling them what they wanted to hear in order to show that we accept your laws as our own. A woman was shockingly, inexplicably cruel to me in the way that only civil servants seem to be capable.

We have joined your forces, and now we are free to walk and, yes, even drive among you. We no longer have to swallow Dexedrine by the handfuls to ward off sleep, and keep our faces expressionless, stifling screams at the sight of dogs with human heads. The State of California has successfully broken our spirits and taught us to feel nothing. By the time we walked out of the DMV, we had abandoned our plan to return and open fire on the cruelest of the guards. We understand now, and we submit to your ways. We will no longer try to fight, because we have seen the truth: that this way is better for everyone.

Lights! Camera! Rimjob!!

I know ever since your Uncle Harold's funeral in Hoboken you've been wishing that your Mother would learn proper etiquette involved in a Casual Rimjob. Well, you're in luck! Tell her to get her face out of that rotting corpse's decomposing poop-chute and grab a note pad cause Napkin is going worldwide!

That's right! Your favorite band Crumpled Napkin will be performing LIVE at Expression College for Digital Arts. This is a multi-media extravaganza: Live Audience (you), Live 24 Track Recording (you farting in the background), live webcast (for our correspondents on Napkin care missions around the world), live pottery and muffin workshop!

All this is going down next Tuesday March 8th at 6:30pm Pacific time. The school is in Emeryville and we can have up to 30 audience members. We need to give a guest list to the security guard (he shoots hippies sometimes) So if you wanna go, Send us an e-mail at crumplednapkin@hotmail.com (front row seats reserved for people who attach nude photos)

If you can't make it and/or want to spread the word of Napkin to that girl you've been chatting with online in Indiana who swears she's a beautiful blond, who used to go out with Tommy Lee, but now she just wants to be with a sweet little hopeless nerd like you.

Simply Log on to: http://www.expression.edu/
Click on the "Webcasts/Concerts" link in the lower right hand corner, take your pant's off and enjoy.

That's right, you need to write a review. In fact, I just did, and I feel 1000% cooler already!

So, see that long red button on the upper right corner of your Tribe that says 'post to tribe.net'? Well, click on it. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Okay, so now you click on 'I'm making a recommendation'

There? Great.

Now, go through and fill in the blanks - I would recommend not using the 'Select a Region' or 'Select a City/Neighborhood' pull-down menus; that way all of their reviews will compile on the same 'SF Bay Area' list, rather than be spread all over as 'East Bay' or 'North Bay' entries. Then, once you've written your review (and given them five stars, of course!) you can choose which of your tribes you'd like to post your recommendation to, and spread the word of the Toad!

Go on. You know you want to... I'll wait...

We are all well aware of the super-human stylings of Chris on instrument of choice.

But no one ever really talks about Uncle Joe, and that is too bad because Uncle Joe, well, he touches me deep, deep inside. Sure his playing may be a little sloppy and his meter, and tempo, and rythm sometimes take a back seat when he's pouring his heart out, but man, that's his soul he's showing you, and if he can't seem to keep it all together for a few moments that's probably because he's trying to get through the song without having a nervous breakdown. With every grinding note that he sings I sense years and years of pain and torment. I don't personally know the man but I've shared in his agony and have come out the other side a stronger human being.

I think everyone should open themselves up to Uncle Joe and let him touch them the way he has touched me.

After one night of staying with Chris and Holly (awww, yeah), we had made up our minds. After two weeks, we were brave enough to admit it. Now, after one more week, my mom says it's OK and has promised not to stop sending us drugs. So it's official: Lava Toad is moving to California. Now all we need are jobs and a place to stay.

We don't ask much in the way of housing: just a small box, a pond for bathing in, a light bulb, and a rock to protect us from the heat of the light bulb. We are clean and quiet, and don't do much hopping--nor do we bark, chew on shoes, or claw furniture. The perfect pets, we are equally happy with people and playing quietly by ourselves. Unlike a certain famous puppy, we won't eat your underwear or hump your stuffed animals. WE DO NOT SPEW LAVA.

What we can afford will depend on the kind of work we can get. We are capable of many tricks, including editing, proofreading, orchestrating, location recording, babysitting, cleaning, delivery driving (see end of paragraph), and mind-numbingly repetitive assembly-line work. WE WILL LITERALLY DO ANYTHING FOR MONEY. THE LAWS OF THE LAND DO NOT FRIGHTEN US.

We can start work as early as Monday the 30th or as late as the third week in June. We can start living in your basement as soon as the Callahans make us stop living in their attic. You should notice a marked reduction in flies and other household pests within a few days.

Please don't make us go back to Seattle. Everyone there is white. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, HELP US.

Thank you very much for reading this post.

Why, Jessica, thank you for asking. I would love to explain how Lava Toad began! I'll start with the title song.

Once upon a time, Uncle Joe lived happily in a little HUD house in the upper-white-trash town of North Bend, forty long, twisted miles east of Seattle, with his wife, Aunt Tammy, and their daughter Sta--let's call her Barb. Inexplicably modest, she would most likely wish to remain anonymous.

Joe, a mild-mannered grocer by day, was, by night, a mild-mannered singer/songwriter/connoisseur of inexpensive wines. Whenever his niece Megan came to visit, along with her husband Chris and Chris's sister Sally (later known as the Punk Rock Goddess), the little house was filled with warmth and song and big hairy dogs, who would later appear in . . . but that's getting ahead of myself.

None of us remember a time when Joe was NOT making up songs, or when exactly we first heard the one that would become the name of our band; what we do remember is the story behind it--the ALLEGED story. It goes like this: Joe was watching one of those nature shows, so he says, with his daughter "Barb" and a friend of hers. Yes, that's right: there are two other witnesses that the elusive Hawaiian lava toad does exist. Why there is no mention of this toad in any encyclopedia, dictionary, or web site--including that of the Museum of Natural History (in HAWAII)--is a mystery, but Joe claims this little toad lives on the Big Island, frolicking among the volcanoes, surviving because it looks like an ugly clump of igneous rock. (This fools the lava into thinking that it's one of its own.) He claims that, in spite of the toad's hideousness, its manner of hopping is so adorable that Joe was moved to write a song about it. Why the original song was sung in a French accent, he does not explain, but he says that it was an instant hit with "Barb" and her friend.

The next time we came to visit, we all sat on the back porch roasting kosher marshmallows on the barbecue. (Joe, Barb, Chris, Sally, and I are vegetarians of about twenty years each--making a century of vegetarianism if you stack us end to end.) Joe, of course, had his guitar, and performed for us, for the first time, the song "Lava Toad." Little did we know that, ten years later (and just a few weeks ago today), our lives would change because of that song.

It was a couple years before we made the first recording of "Lava Toad," and, unfortunately, we no longer have that version, which included Punk Rock Sally in the backups. (The one on the CD, alas, does not.) That was in 1997, and we were recording onto a tape, using Sally's four-track which was later stolen out of her house. Being lazy, lazy fuck-ups, we didn't get around to recording the CD *Lava Toad* until 1999.

The story of how *Lava Toad* made it all the way down the coast (git along, git along) has to do with a very important four people who were strangers to us until we received their first e-mails on January 9th, 2001, at 9:31 a.m. I still have those e-mails. You folks know who you are: if you'll give your permission, I will reprint them here. (If you'd like to see them first, let me know.)
But for those who DON'T know:

Sally is a real good artist.
Her name is really Sally and she really is a real good artist.
Spatula is a toy collector,
And all the neighborhood kids respect her,
But what they don't know is that her real name's Sally,
And when she goes out at night people tell her:
"You're a real good artist."

Well, OK, that's not one of the songs where the lyrics really stand alone--you kind of have to hear it to appreciate it. And hear the dogs barking.

famous for the very first time.

[After the phenomenal success of our recent film, Truth or Untruth, which Amazon reviewers called "an engaging behind-the-scenes look at the pop stars' Blind Amphibian tour," we have decided, despite the violent objections of Warren Beatty, to write a book documenting every waking minute of our lives. The following is an excerpt.]

So, I'm thinking the kids* deserve more in a babysitter than someone who'll show them all the movies their dad won't let them see, and I drive them out to the Burke-Gilman trail to ride bikes. Two minutes into the ride, Gene, who has the habit of veering wildly left without looking, is hit by a rollerblader and crashes to the ground. Before I can skid to a stop, he's already screaming that he can't feel his right leg or move his right pinky. The leg thing turns out to be an exaggeration--soon he's limping well enough back to the car--but his pinky does look swollen. I don't feel qualified to decide what to do, and since we're just a few blocks from the church where his dad works, we stop by to get Mitch's advice.

Mitch, a Reverend Lovejoy-type pastor with no tolerance for hysterical Ned Flanderses, is not alarmed--he knows as well as I do that Gene will jump at any chance for attention--but he, too, thinks the pinky looks swollen, and that it's worth having checked out. He draws me a map to their pediatrician, and the whole time he's giving directions, Gene is saying, "Dad. Dad. Dad. See, look--Dad. When I try to go like this . . ."

Mitch gives me Gene's insurance card and, at the last minute, scribbles a note for the receptionist at the top of the map, giving his permission for me to take his son to the doctor. I'm thinking, What the hell kind of jerk would refuse to treat an injured child without a parent's permission? But I take the note and we leave.

The receptionist accepts the insurance card and says the doctor will see us next. Sure enough, she doesn't ask for a permission slip. We sit down to wait, and since the only magazines are the usual kind (existing merely as vehicles for their sponsors and, therefore, containing only articles geared toward making you want to buy the products they advertise), I pass the time writing notes to myself. I'm thinking, as I have been all week, about this tribe I just found out about where people--get this--insult each other for fun. I know, I know--it sounds incredible, but cred it--it's true. In particular, I'm thinking about that tribe's self-description, which warns that you'll be insulted for your race, age, etc., and I start wondering about other qualities and thinking, What about this? What about that? On and on. Being obsessive, I decide to make a list of everything not mentioned in the warning, so I turn over the superfluous permission slip and write the following:

"Income; social status (including number of friends {and not just on Tribe}); IQ; mental and physical disabilities; height; weight; ratio of body fat to lean body mass; whiteness of teeth; color of hair; personal freshness; personal habits (including addictions and sexual practices); baldness; difficulty getting high, getting laid, getting off . . ."

And that's as far as I get before the doctor calls us in. He wraps the leg in an Ace bandage and orders an x-ray for the pinky, which means we have to go back downstairs and into another office, where they take the insurance card and verify Gene's address and date of birth all over again. Then, finding out that I'm not the parent--DOH!--they demand a permission slip.

So I hand them the note, assuming they only need to glance at the signature and praying they won't turn it over (while trying to remember whether or not I included "number of times you've had sex with someone who wasn't drunk"). The receptionist (stereotypically snotty, impatient kind) looks irritated that it's scrawled on the same page as the map, but decides it will do and starts to paperclip it to Gene's other paperwork. When I tell her I need it back, she says she'll make a copy. I assume she means a copy for THEM, but, no, she means for me.

Trying to make it sound like a normal request, I ask if I can have it back for just one moment. While she waits impatiently, I turn it over and cross out everything I've written, scribbling extra hard over the words "Genital odor, butt-eating skill, number of times you've offered your leg to a dog and the dog has refused."

[End of excerpt.]

*Eric, 8, and Gene, 13: these kids we babysit. (Yes, of course: I'm too old to be babysitting and Gene is too old for a babysitter. The answer in both cases is that we're troubled--him emotionally, me financially, what with the Warner Music lawsuit and getting ripped off by my art consultant.)
